Summary

If you’ve ever pondered what college kids are up to on their phones these days, we’ve gained an answer for you. Here interviewed over 30 college students ranging from ages 18 to 24 from schools all over the province to find out what apps are the must-haves right now. Here we make a list of Top Apps for College Student 2018. We studied everything from classics like Facebook to newcomers like Poshmark.
  • Netflix
  • VSCO
  • Facebook
  • Instagram
  • Snapchat
  • Shazam
  • YouTube
  • Pandora
  • Groupme
  • Tinder
  • Pinterest
  • Uber
  • Twitter

VCSO is a hot photo editing app. While it’s not as popular as Instagram, students tell us the variety of filter options make this app a campus favorite

VCSO
It comes to the top photo apps, Instagram, with its 300 million monthly users, seemingly has the game on lock. But VSCO Cam — a three-year-old photo-editing app — has better filters (“presets”) and editing capabilities.

Not surprisingly, Snapchat is a must-have for many of the students TI spoke to. Why? Several students said Snapchat is “easy” to use

Snapchat
Snapchat is a fun way to send pictures and videos to friends, but it’s not the most user-friendly app.

Poshmark lets you sell unwanted items from your closet to complete strangers. College kids can use it to easily earn extra cash.

Poshmark
Over one million people have sold items on Poshmark, an app that lets you sell unwanted items from your closet to complete strangers.

One student described the Facebook app as “an oldie, but a goodie that shows me my friends, but more importantly as of late, the news of the world

FB

Spotify takes the cake for music apps. “I don’t own any music,” a student told TI. “I just use Spotify premium for everything.”

And finally, nearly all of the students we talked to ranked Instagram among their favorite apps

Instagram

Shazam lets you use your phone to identify any song that’s playing. If you’re an iPhone user, you can skip this one. Siri is already Shazam-enabled to identify music.

The Netflix app is perfect for binge-watching between classes and while on the go.

Netflix
Take your Netflix experience to the next level with these secret category codes. Using these codes, it’s easy to quickly sort through programs to find something you really want to watch. Now instead of scanning through a seemingly-endless list of romcoms, I just punch in number 3797 ( the code for romantic comedies starring Cary Grant) and I’m just a click away from watching “His Girl Friday.

GroupMe makes for easier mass communication. “All of my labs have their own group,” one student explained.

“I feel like most app-based socializing in college happens on Tinder,” one student said of the popular dating app.

About a third of the students, we talked to ranked Pandora among their tops apps.

Pandora
Pandora’s latest feature, Thumbprint Radio, which aims to take on Spotify and Apple. Pandora thinks it’s better than any other service at knowing what music you like. And it’s ready to prove it to you.

YouTube is also a top choice for college students. “I can watch all of my favorite YouTubers and the app sends me a notification when they upload [a new video],” one student told TI.

YouTube

Forget cash — money transfer app Venmo is the preferred method for many students to pay back their friends.

Forget cash
Venmo-induced envy, or “Venvy,” Ever feel inexplicably jealous and sad all because of your friends’ Venmo transactions? There’s now a name for that reaction.

Students can save ideas and inspiration from their phone for later by using the Pinterest app.

Students are using ride-sharing app Uber to get from place to place.

Twitter is immediate, it’s at the moment,” a student told TI of our number four app. “Twitter is easy to use and fun to be creative with.
