Summary

Again this year GitHub published again its State of Octoverse Report and illuminates with numerous statistics the GitHub community more exactly. As the latest Octoverse report shows, JavaScript is the most popular or widely used programming language among GitHub developers.
Meanwhile, the GitHub community spans almost the entire globe. Most users of the platform come from America, followed by China and India. Germany is in fifth place.
Overall, GitHub has 31 million members this year. Just a year ago , there were just 24 million GitHub users. Most of the 6 million new applications come mainly from the Middle East, Africa and Southeast Asia.
The 31 million developers may have been quite busy in 2018, as they have created within a year, about 40 percent of the currently about 96 million repositories. In addition, about 30 percent of the 200 million pull requests that have been created since the launch of the platform have been created over the past 12 months. About 2.1 million different organizations are now represented on GitHub, this number has almost doubled since the last Octoverse Report.
JavaScript makes the race
The State of Octoverse 2018 Report also highlights which programming languages are most commonly used on GitHub, as measured by contributors in public and private repositories, organizations, and the region. One programming language stands out in particular: JavaScript.
So JavaScript is making the most of the 10 most popular programming languages. Java then follows in second place and Python in third place. Ruby and C are at the bottom of the list, and Objective C has not been in the top 10 since 2016.
However, when it comes to the fastest growing language, Kotlin emerges victorious. The number of Kotlin developers has grown 2.6 times compared to last year. Second place goes to HCL (2.2 times) and third place goes to TypeScript (1.9 times). So the trend seems to be towards static typed languages.
The most popular projects at GitHub
Measured by the number of developers involved in an open source project, VS Code is a lonely record holder with almost 20,000 contributors. React and Tensorflow follow with 10,000 and 9,300 contributors, respectively. Just in the list of the 10 most popular open source projects DefinitelyTyped manages with 6000 contributors.
Furthermore, GitHub also focused on the 10 most popular topics of GitHub developers. The GitHub users liked to work on topics around React, Android and Node.js. Other interesting topics are machine learning, electron and the development of APIs.
Also in the area, the fastest growing topics can be seen interesting. The developers most often dealt with the Hacktoberfest. Pytorch, the Python machine learning library, is also a hot topic right now, as are cryptocurren- cies and smart contracts.
The GitHub community was interviewed from October 1, 2017 through September 30, 2018. The detailed results for all the topics listed above and other areas are available in the State of Octoverse 2018 report.
