Summary

Summertime is always special for a number of reasons: vacations, beautiful weather, beach days, barbeques, and here at New Relic, interns! However, this year’s interns aren’t your average data nerds. Their duties range from graphic design, customer analytics, sales, web strategy, product security, and more. In addition to our interns’ budding professional skills, their personal talents are all over the map and include singing and songwriting; breakdancing; college sports such as football, volleyball, rowing, and track; running a music company; and even horse training! (There also seems to be general fondness for shiba inus among the group.)
Yes, we have some pretty awesome interns, so let’s stop wasting time and get to know them.

Our tech-savvy engineering interns:

Anna Lorimer, Product Security Intern

School: University of Waterloo, Canada

Personal anthem: Mr. Brightside by The Killers
Favorite show: Bob’s Burgers
Favorite food: Lemon Tarts, the sourer the better
Favorite coding language: Python
Dream destination: Dublin, Ireland
What’s your passion?
“The one thing outside of work that I spend a lot of time on is horse training, especially a couple of rescue horses.”
Do you see yourself staying in product security
“Ya, I think so, I’ve done other internships where you do the ‘red team’ side of hacking, but now I get to work on the defensive side or the ‘blue team,’ which is really cool.”
What do you want to accomplish or learn during this internship?
“I would like to have worked on something that will be really useful for my team, not something that no one is going to look at again when I leave. I would like to learn more about defending systems from hackers.”

Emily Peterson, Product Security Intern

Hometown: Born and raised in Kirkland, Wash.
Personal anthem: Wild Ride by High Dive Heart
Favorite show: How I Met Your Mother

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
“I can’t see that far into the future! I want to keep working in security, possibly go to grad school. I want to live somewhere in the Pacific Northwest.”
What’s your passion?
Cross country and track team. I’ve had a lot of injuries, but love running because of the team environment and the competition aspect.”

Olivia Wong, Product Engineer Intern

Personal anthem: Binky by Snarky Puppy
Favorite show: Black Mirror
Favorite food: mac and cheese
Favorite coding language: Python

What would you consider your passion?
“Making music. I play the clarinet and piano, but I’m getting more into the guitar lately. Music creates a community of people who appreciate music, and I’ve met a lot of great people through joining ensembles and making music with them.”
If you could code or create anything in the world, what would it be?
“A robot that would cook your dinner. Think about how much time that would save people, and the convenience? Plus, it helps that I can’t cook to save my life.”
What would you like to learn or accomplish at this internship?
“My project involves finding a way to use New Relic with IoT (Internet of Things) devices, so building a solution to that would be my main goal. I would also like to learn about machine learning and meet new people.”

Our ever-so-valuable customer analytics interns:

Dominic Tu, Customer Analytics Intern

School: University of California, Berkeley
Facebook: Dominic Tu | LinkedIn
Hometown: Born in Oakland and raised in Hercules, Calif.

Favorite show: Westworld
Favorite food: Steak, medium rare to be exact
Favorite coding language: R
Dream destination: Taiwan
Do you see yourself staying in customer analytics?
“I think I’ll move over to big data, like data science/analytics. The questions that you are allowed to ask are very open and the data you have access to is very broad, so you can explore different trends that people haven’t even considered yet.”
What’s your passion?
“Listening to new music, specifically underground music. I actually started a small music company with my college roommate.” (Check it out: wedreamworlds.com)
If you could code anything in the world, what would it be?
“Solar-powered electric planes.”

Frankie Lin, Customer Analytics Intern

Personal anthem: Reborn by Kids See Ghosts
Favorite show: Doesn’t watch TV (yes, you read that right)
Favorite food: Beef noodle soup
Favorite coding language: R
Dream destination: A backpacking trip through Europe
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
“I see myself in the Bay, I like the area. Probably in tech, hopefully in San Francisco. Potentially get a Ph.D. in economics if my grades are good enough—we’ll see. Who knows about everything else, but I want a dog, and a normal sized one, not like a chihuahua or anything.”
What’s your passion?
“I like clothes. I learned how to sew last year because I had too much free time. I’m not really good at it, but I try.”
If you could code anything in the world, what would it be?
“A program that could predict economic crashes.”

Our one and only intern working on the sales team:

Sierra Lyle, Sales Intern

School: Dartmouth, New Hampshire
Instagram: @sierralyle | Blog: thehappinesshunt.com
Hometown: Born and raised in San Diego, Calif.
Person anthem: Wide Open Spaces by Dixie Chicks
Favorite show: The Handmaid’s Tale
Favorite food: poke, specifically The Lanai
Favorite coding language: Python (“Just kidding. I don’t code, but if I did, definitely Python because it’s just so trendy.”)
Dream destination: The Cook Islands
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
“That’s scary, and always changing for me, especially after my last few internships. At the moment, I kind of just want to be a bad a** businesswoman, whether that’s in tech or finance or whatever. The Bay Area for a while and then back to San Diego whenever I’m ready to start a family. Probably no kids, I just don’t see that happening at 30 with my current track record.”
If you could code anything in the world, what would it be?
“I wish I could type out a sentence of my current mood and then with A.I. and all that fun coding, some program would generate the song that matches my mood/description of that sentence (for example: ‘I feel like a damp kitten stranded in the rain,’ and then—boom—cue Adele).”

Lastly, we have my personal favorite, the marketing interns:

Chris Azuma, Analyst Relations and Competitive Intelligence Intern

What’s your passion?
“Rowing; I am the coxswain at SSU. I’m also very interested in the role of the United States in international politics.”
By the end of this internship, what do you want to say you’ve accomplished or learned?
“I want to feel like I helped New Relic reach its goals. I want to feel useful—that for me is the most important thing.”

Divyanshu Shivesh, Product/Partner Marketing Intern

What is your passion?
“Traveling. I’ve been to 20 countries so far, and want to continue to expand that list.”
If you could code anything in the world, what would it be?
“An AI-powered personal doctor which could diagnose patients at home via a few cheap sensors and a mobile device. Healthcare costs are extremely expensive in this country, and people stay sick to avoid healthcare bills. This would bring much needed preventive care to homes all over the country and help people save millions on healthcare annually.”
By the end of this internship, what do you want to say you’ve accomplished or learned?
“I want to learn more about the partner marketing side of things and more about how great software can impact companies. I also want to meet as many people in the company as I can to get a clear vision of what I would like to do in the future.”

Mark Aquino, Segment/Account-Based Marketing Intern

School: San Francisco State University, Calif.
LinkedIn
Hometown: Born in Santa Clara and raised in Newark/Milpitas, Calif.
Personal anthem: Can I Kick It by A Tribe Called Quest
Favorite show: The Office
Favorite food: chicken katsu curry
Favorite coding language: HTML
Dream destination: “Japan, hands down.”
Do you see yourself staying in segment/account-based marketing?
“Absolutely. I’m a big believer that whom you work with has the most impact as far as potential learning and having a great experience at work goes, and this is definitely a team I would be down to do some damage with long-term. I also have a strong conviction that I can learn a lot from my managers Caroline, Shay, and Tommy, my mentor Meg as well as many other people in and out of marketing.”
What is your passion?
“I was really passionate about b-boying (breakdancing) throughout most of my high school and early college years. I was against it when I started out but was forced into trying it out by my friends. It eventually became more than a hobby to where I competed locally and would practice a number of days a week. I’ve been meaning to try to revisit that passion and try out other hobbies as well, but for now, marketing is taking the seat on that train.”

Shawn Fleming, Design Intern

School: Binghamton University, New York

Hometown: Born and raised in Syracuse, New York
Personal anthem: Supercut by Lorde
Favorite show: Stranger Things
Favorite food: sushi
Favorite coding language: HTML
Dream destination: Kyoto, Japan
What’s your passion?
“Singing and songwriting. My senior year of high school I discovered that I could sing and since then I started posting YouTube videos (check out his channel). Then I started writing my own songs. I put one on YouTube and a kid from my high school tweeted at me asking to send him more stuff as I wrote so we could make an album together. Now I’m about to finish my second album.”
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
“I would like to work at a tech company, maybe in a more managerial position, and I would like to be able to afford a house here in San Francisco. I definitely want a shiba inu dog, but I don’t know about kids—I guess 31-year-old me will decide.”

Quinn Zsido, Web Strategy Intern

School: Carnegie Mellon University, Penn.
Instagram: @quinnzsido8 | Twitter: @QZsido8
Hometown: Born in Fort Knox, Ky., and raised in Cornwall, N.Y.
Personal anthem: Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood (Kill Bill Vol. 1)
Favorite show: Game of Thrones (season 6 specifically)
Favorite food: sushi
Favorite coding language: “SQL, because I love looking at the relationship between people and data.”
Dream destination: Japan
If you could code anything in the world, what would it be?
“I would code an AI program that could predict others’ behavior; it could predict my behavior perfectly and be like the optimal Google home. Just like in the ‘White Christmas’ episode of Black Mirror.
By the end of this internship, what do you want to say you’ve accomplished or learned?
“I want to be able to go anywhere and do anything in New Relic and in tech. The tech industry is fairly new to me so I want to be able to navigate any or all work environments in San Francisco.”

And, lastly, there is me:

Adreanna Ekdawy, Content Marketing Intern

School: Santa Clara University, Calif.
Instagram: @__adre__ | Twitter @AdreannaEkdawy
Hometown: Born in Atlanta, Ga., and raised in Yuba City, Calif.
Personal anthem: Rise Up by Andra Day
Favorite show: Sex and the City
Favorite food: sushi and poke are actual obsessions of mine!
Favorite coding language: JavaScript
Dream destination: Copenhagen, Denmark
Do I see myself staying in content marketing?
Totally! It wasn’t an avenue of marketing I had really stopped to consider before this internship, but I’ve always enjoyed writing (especially the slightly more casual blog style), and now I’ve found the perfect space to combine my interest in writing and marketing.
If I could code anything in the world, I would create…
A program that had a comprehensive database of everything in my closet, organized by season, designer, size, date of purchase, etc., and depending on the weather, my mood, and activity of the day, would offer me a couple of outfit recommendations—perfectly paired with accessories, shoes, and maybe even a lipstick color.
