Summary
The OpenJS Foundation is created by merging Node.js and JS Foundation. It aims to promote the dissemination of JavaScript and seeks to support projects that are – or may be – of particular importance to the JavaScript ecosystem.
The JavaScript world has a new institution: the NJ Foundation and the JS Foundation merge to form the OpenJS Foundation. The OpenJS Foundation pursues several goals around the promotion of JavaScript. It aims to support the development of projects of particular relevance to the JavaScript ecosystem and to increase the distribution of the language. The foundation operates under the umbrella of the Linux Foundation.
The managers of the newly founded foundation want to achieve this through several projects. The OpenJS Foundation hosts projects that the OpenJS Foundation believes are particularly important to the JS ecosystem. Such projects are to be jointly funded by the members of the Foundation. In addition, efforts will be made to increase collaboration between the hosted projects. All projects have access to the tech and community government templates of the OpenJS Foundation.
Among the members of the OpenJS Foundation are tech greats like Google, IBM, PayPal and Microsoft. Supported projects include tools and frameworks from a variety of areas, such as ESLint, jQuery, Node.js, or Webpack.
Tech companies should become members
The newly founded foundation invites companies from the tech industry to join them as members. This refers to companies for which JavaScript plays a particularly important role. According to the OpenJS Foundation, companies could promote projects described above through their membership. The FAQ on the official website of the Open JS Foundation makes it clear that membership is not tied to financial expenditures. Detailed membership information is available on request.
The merger of the two foundations is now at the end of a multi-month process. This process was driven, according to IBM , by the desire in the JS world for closer collaboration between the Node.js community and the rest of the JavaScript community.
